What is a dentigerous cyst?

A dentigerous cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms around the crown of an unerupted permanent (adult) tooth. It is a type of dental cyst that affects the jaw.

Is a dentigerous cyst cancerous?

No. But left untreated it can cause complications, and in rare cases an infected cyst can cause cells to change and grow into cancerous tumors.

How is a dentigerous cyst treated?

Oral surgery is the standard treatment: smaller cysts are removed along with the affected tooth; larger cysts may be treated with marsupialization (drainage).

Can dentigerous cysts be prevented?

No, they cannot be prevented, but timely treatment reduces the risk of complications.

What is the difference between a dentigerous cyst and an eruption cyst?

A dentigerous cyst forms while a tooth is still in the bone. An eruption cyst forms after the tooth moves through the jawbone, just before breaking through the gums, and is far more common in children.
